The Briarwood Academy varsity football team will start practice July 26 and will participate in a few scrimmages in the following weeks, according to Head Coach Jimmy Barnett.
Briarwood has been inundated with players this year after last year's region championship. Thirty-one players are scheduled to suit for the Bucs, many of them new to the sport of football.
That means Coach Barnett and company have spent a good part of the summer teaching the basics.
"With those numbers comes a lot of inexperience," he said. "But we're excited about it and the new kids who are going to join, and we're excited to see what they can do."
Coach Barnett said his practices won't be overly intense, instead stressing teaching rather than just running a boot camp.
"If I wanted to be a drill sergeant I'd be down at Paris Island. We'll be ready when the bell rings," he said. "I'm ready for this. I like the challenge."
