The Thomson High Bulldogs will begin the tall task of a drive for the Class AAA state championship July 19 with two-a-day practices.
"The morning time will be spent on fundamentals of blocking and tackling. We can't run full speed, because we can't use full pads, but we can work on getting our minds right. In the evening practice, we'll work on plays. It's a time when we start putting the pieces together to see what we have," said THS head football coach Luther Welsh.
"We are in fairly good shape since we've been going through weight training all summer, but we will be battling heat and humidity, so it won't be easy," he said.
Coach Welsh said the season would be successful, but was tight-lipped about anything grandiose.
"I think we'll have a winning year, but beyond that, we'll just have to see. Class AAA is strong and since we haven't been down there for years. While some of the teams we have been playing for years, there are other good programs that make Class AAA a pretty tough class," he said.
The coach said as of right now, he is anxious to see how the kids return and how much they have improved over last year.
"Are they much better or about the same? We'll just have to wait and see, but it is exciting to anticipate. The ones who played last year will have to carry the load. Then we have seven or eight positions we have to have new people at, so there will be some competition for positions. There's a lot of work to be done and we just need to get to it," he said.
Thomson will play two scrimmages this year. The first will be at Lincoln County Aug. 6 at 8 p.m. The second will be the following Friday at 8 p.m. at Screven County. The regular season begins Aug. 20 at The Brickyard against non-sub-region Elbert County.
