"We have to change the tune and the tone of government," said Mrs. Cox, who faces Georgia Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor in the July 18 Democratic Primary,

Mrs. Cox was in town for a Monday night fundraiser, but stopped for a meet-and-greet session at White Columns. During the event, she touched on several of her campaign platforms, including recruiting better industry, providing more extensive healthcare coverage and improving education.

"It's no longer a matter of if kids from McDuffie County ... can compete with other kids from across the state," she said. "They've got to compete with students all over the world."

Dot Knox, who helped organize Monday night's reception, said Mrs. Cox has pledged to work across party lines if she is elected governor.
