Filling the principal slot at Thomson Elementary School may be an inside job.
According to information released during the Board of Education's Wednesday morning work session, Assistant Principal Beth Newton is being recommended to the school board to fill the principal spot vacated by the retirement of Dr. Donald Davis.
School board members will vote on the recommendation Thursday evening.
"I'm very excited," Mrs. Newton said. "I'm looking forward to doing great things at TES because the faculty and staff there are top notch. We're a great school as it is right now, and I'm looking forward to doing even better things and going farther than we've gone so far."
Mrs. Newton taught at Maxwell Elementary School from 1979 until 1997. She has been assistant principal at Thomson Elementary School for eight years.
Superintendent Mark Petersen said he wouldn't comment on the recommendation until after Thursday evening. But Carol Farr, who has taught second grade at TES for the past 30 years, shares Mrs. Newton's excitement.
"I'm excited," said Mrs. Farr. "She's done a really good job, and I just think we're really blessed to get her because she's been there; she knows what we've done. She knows the school, and I just think it's a really good thing. I'm really excited for her. She's a hard, hard worker, and I think we're going to be in good hands."
