The baseball and softball action for several local all-star teams, sponsored by the Thomson-McDuffie County Recreation Department, is still very active and competitive, as they are participating in district tournaments throughout central and southern parts of Georgia.
In district softball action last week, the Thomson-McDuffie 9-10 year old All-stars began their post-season play on July 6 in a tournament in Swainsboro. This team is coached by Wayne Wilson.
Also in a tournament that began on July 6 in Lyons, the 11-12 year old Midget girls were vying for a prestigious district championship against several other very tough teams. Ross Rabun is this team's coach. (For more on this team, see Page 2D.)
In machine pitch basball action, the 9-10 year old All-Stars played in their district tournament in Vidalia beginning on July 9. Torrie Battle is the coach of this squad.
On July 10, the 11-12 year old All-Stars played in Statesboro in hopes of bringing home a district championship trophy back to Thomson. Chris Elliott and Billy Anderson are the coaches of these all-stars.
In tournament action that has already been played, the 13-14 year old junior girls from McDuffie County were eliminated last week from their district softball competition in Effingham County after only two games.
On June 28, Dublin defeated the Thomson All-Stars 9-7, and then on June 29, Effingham County defeated Thomson 8-6. Brett Jenkins was their coach.
Also at the beginning of last week, the 13-14 junior boys, coached by Sydney Smith, participated in their district tournament in Effingham County. This squad was eliminated after consecutive losses of 10-6 and 10-0 on June 28-29.
The 15-17 senior girl all-stars were eliminated from their district softball tournament last week in Effingham County. In their first contest, Thomson was defeated by Effingham County 15-10 on June 29. Tracy Ansley was the coach of this team.
