Johnson pleads not guilty in Brooks' shooting

Michael Samuel Johnson appeared before Toombs Judicial Circuit Chief Judge Roger W. Dunaway Jr. in McDuffie County Superior Court in Thomson last Thursday and pleaded not guilty to murder and assorted criminal charges in connection with the shooting death of a local man last Thanksgiving eve.

The 28-year-old Mr. Johnson was accompanied by his attorney, Jacque Hawk, of Augusta. Mr. Johnson, still being held as an inmate at the McDuffie County Law Enforcement Center, was brought into the courtroom amid heavy security by deputies. Chief Assistant District Attorney Woody Davis represented the prosecution.

He is accused in the 2006 Thanksgiving eve shooting death of Todd Brooks, who was shot multiple times inside Mr. Johnson's mobile home, located off the Wrens Highway, near Thomson. The shooting reportedly followed an argument between the two men, stemming from a young woman who was staying at the Johnson residence.

A county grand jury recently indicted Mr. Johnson on charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of certain crimes, according to court records filed in the McDuffie County Superior Court Clerk's Office.

Several other persons also were arraigned on separate charges last week. Those pleading not guilty to various charges included:

  • Jason David Scurry, of Thomson, aggravated assault, battery, cruelty to children in third degree and obstructing an emergency telephone call. The charges stem from a threat he reportedly made against a woman, while holding a handgun to her head on July 20, 2006, according to court records.

  • Herman Lamont Germany, of Thomson, aggravated child molestation, aggravated sodomy and child molestation.

  • Sylvester Stockton, of Thomson, aggravated assault and possession of a knife during the commission of certain crimes.

  • Barry Harris, of Thomson, forgery in the first degree.

  • Kenneth L. Holloway, of Oxford, Ga., theft by taking and possession of tools during the commission of a crime.

  • Alexander Deal, of Augusta, theft by taking.

  • Lateraneshia Cobb, of Thomson, Violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act (VGCSA) for misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

  • Robert Eugene Laster, of Dearing, burglary.

  • Michael Raymond Cushman Jr., of Thomson, VGCSA for possession of Methamphetamine.

  • Kevin Richard Jones, of Norwood, burglary, theft by taking and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer.

  • Crystal Brook Swint, of Thomson, burglary and theft by taking.

  • Philamenia Willionia Scott, of Augusta, procuring drugs for inmates and criminal attempt to deliver marijuana to inmates.
