Newton named TES principal
Last Thursday, the McDuffie County Board of Education unanimously approved Beth Newton as the new principal for Thomson Elementary School. Mrs. Newton's change of status from assistant principal to principal will be effective at the beginning of the 2005-2006 school year.
Mrs. Newton has been assistant principal at TES since 1997. Before that, she taught at Maxwell Elementary School for 18 years.
Board Chairman Jerry Randolph welcomed Mrs. Newton to her new position following the announced approval of her position change.
"Thank you," Mrs. Newton said to the board members. "I have high expectations, and I know you will be hearing from me a lot."
Airport business park gets renewed look
A new conceptual drawing for a business park next to the airport, called North Park Business Center, was revealed at the meeting of the Development Authority of McDuffie County and the City of Thomson Tuesday morning.
The drawing by Georgia Power Company for their Georgia Resource Center, is an updated version of a drawing made in 1991. At that time, more property was available, and the focus was on developing that property for industry. Since then, the McDuffie Campus of Augusta Tech moved onto the property.
According to Don Powers, director, the 2005 drawing does not have an industrial focus, but a commercial and business focus.
"It's aimed to show people what could happen out there if they wanted to locate next to the airport, next to the interstate, next to (highway) 278. It's for commercial and business people," Mr. Powers said.
The drawing is available through the Georgia Resource Center and online at www.southernco.com.
