The East Georgia Hurricanes
were McDuffie County's lone
representative in the Eight and
Under Machine Pitch World
Series held at Sweetwater Park
last week. And according to
Hurricanes Coach Scott Swann,
they had a strong showing.

The Hurricanes, made up of
players mostly from McDuffie
County, went 2-5 in the tournament.
With the strength of
competition in this year's event,
and with the Hurricanes missing
several players, Coach
Swann said he was proud of
his team's record.
"The competition was
tougher than I ever imagined
it would have been based on
last year's World Series," he
said. "It took a few days for the
kids that were playing out of
position to really get a feel for
the position they were playing
in the tournamentŠ I feel like
we did pretty good."
After holding their own with
the Georgia state champion
Team Extreme during a game
on Friday, the Hurricanes lost
by only two runs.
"I felt like that was an accomplishment
to show that we
could play at that level, against
some of the better teams,"
Coach Swann said.
That didn't keep the Hurricanes
from taking home some
hardware from the tournament
though. One high note during
the World Series was the individual
competitions that took
place on Thursday night. Out
of the three competitions, Hurricane
players took first place
in two.
Hunter Bragg won the
homerun derby competition
with four homeruns. His closest
competition had only two.
Also, Marquavious Cummings
took home first place in the
base running competition.
