The Briarwood Academy varsity cheerleading squad received top honors at the Universal Cheerleading Association camp held July 15-18 at the University of Georgia in Athens.
"They just did a great job," said Amy Hadden, who, along with Mary Lynn Reese, coaches the 19-member squad.
The Buccaneer cheerleaders were one of the few squads to receive all Superior ribbons and a Superior trophy for overall performance, an honor awarded only to the top squads. They are now eligible to cheer at the Capitol One Bowl in Orlando, Fla., as well as the Hollywood Christmas Parade in Hollywood, Cal. The squad also received a third place trophy for their extreme routine, which is a dance with an incorporated stunt sequence.
Senior Mallory Jo Bradshaw was among an elite group selected from the approximately 900 girls at camp as a Universal Cheerleading Association All Star. She will be given the opportunity to cheer in the London New Year's Day Parade.
The camp, hosted by Mary Lou Braswell, the cheerleading coach for UGA, was the largest of the year with more than 900 cheerleaders, according to Mrs. Hadden. While at camp the girls spent four days learning cheers, dances and stunts that were taught by UCA instructors. They resided in Creswell Hall while on the UGA campus.
"Even through three late-night false alarm fire drills at the dorm, the girls had a great time," Mrs. Hadden said. "They learned a lot of fan incorporation cheers and are excited about the upcoming football season which begins Aug. 20."
Captains for this year's squad are seniors Kelley Wills and Alli Wood. Squad members include seniors Mallory Jo Bradshaw and Traylee Chalker; juniors Britt Edwards, Amy McGee and Melisa Newsome; sophomores Ali Dyson, Liz Grant, Heather Neal, Courtney Price and Amanda Rutkowski; and freshmen Samantha Arthur, Joy Dudley, Samantha Jenkins, Abby McAvoy, Whitney McTier, Blaire Moyer and Brooke Wiley.
