Mrs. Geneva Hicks Coxwell
Retired Secretary

McCOLL, S.C. - Mrs. Geneva Hicks Coxwell, 80, formerly of Thomson, entered into rest July 25, 2007, at Morrison Manor in Laurinburg, N.C.

She was a daughter of the late George Lester and Nell Schoffiett Hicks. Born in Lumpkin County, Geneva attended school in Camak and Warrenton, graduating from Warren County High School. She attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, majoring in business education. Following college, she moved to Thomson in 1947 and began work for Knox Realty as a secretary. She met and married J.W. Coxwell in November of 1948. Geneva was a member of the National Secretaries Association and received her CPS (Certified Professional Secretary) rating in 1979. Geneva retired after 43 years of service with ITT Rayonier as secretary and bookkeeper. She was an avid gardener with a special fondness for iris and hummingbirds. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Thomson and a member of the OSME Sunday school class. Later, she joined Main Street United Methodist Church in McColl, S.C. She was a member of United Methodist Women and the Carlisle Book Club in McColl, S.C.

She is predeceased by her husband, J. W. Coxwell, Jr.; her sister, Juanita Hicks Rollins, and bother, James William "Billy" Hicks.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary Coxwell Tatum and devoted son-in-law, William of McColl, S.C; son Daniel R. Coxwell and beloved daughter-in-law Angela, Dublin, Ga., son, William E. "Bill" Coxwell, Augusta; one granddaughter, Gray Tatum Covington and her husband, Rhett, McColl, S.C.; two grandsons, Ryan Coxwell, Atlanta, and Jesse Coxwell, Dublin, Ga., and two precious great-grandchildren, John Rhett Covington and Emma Gray Covington, McColl, S.C., several nieces and nephews and loyal, loving pets, Sidney, Sandy, and Sam.

Memorials may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church Music Ministry, McColl, Thomson First United Methodist Church Family Life Center, Thomson Chapter of Relay for Life, or Hospice of Scotland County, Laurinburg, N.C.

A musical memorial service was held on July 28, 2007 at Main Street United Methodist Church, McColl, S.C., at 2 p.m. Graveside service was held in Thomson at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens on July 29, 2007, at 2 p.m.

Rogers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
