Dearing makes plans for Relay for Life team

Even though the 2006 McDuffie County Relay for Life raised more than ever, the bar is being raised for 2007 with the addition of a new team from the town of Dearing. Dearing Mayor Sean Kelly met with Beverly McCorkle-Welch and Tammy Cason on Tuesday evening to plan the team.

"The things we are thinking about, we are really going to need some support from the community. We would love to be up there with the City of Thomson team and raise $25,000," Mrs. Welch said.

The first team meeting will be at 7 p.m. tonight at the Dearing Town Hall. Mrs. Welch said she wants to encourage many people to show up and discuss plans for fundraisers in Dearing.

The City of Thomson's team raises funds through the city's public safety and other employees, which Dearing does not have. But Mrs. Welch is not intimidated.

"If (the City of Thomson) can do it, we can do it. We're hoping, but you never know, it's been going on for many years. ... You know a lot of people get burned out," Mrs. Welch said. "But it's a very good cause, and I would love to see the money that is collected come up with a cure for cancer, and that we would never hear of the word again."

For more information, contact Beverly McCorkle-Welch at 706-595-9702 or Tammy Cason at 706-556-3697.
