Columbia County Deputy Coroner Vernon Collins identified the child as Jer'von M. Jordan and pronounced him dead at the scene at 2:20 p.m.
Jer'von was a passenger in a 1991 Toyota Camry driven by his mother, Trista Jordan, 21, also of Thomson, Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said.
Ms. Jordan was on her way home from work about 1:30 p.m. on East White Oak Road near the McDuffie County line when the vehicle left the roadway, went out of control and flipped, Capt. Morris said.
The child was ejected from the vehicle and crushed, the captain said. Jer'von was not restrained in a car seat, nor was he wearing a seat belt, Mr. Collins said. An autopsy showed the child died of blunt force trauma to the head and neck, he said.
Ms. Jordan refused medical treatment at the scene and numerous traffic charges are pending, Capt. Morris said.
