Vandals hit Brickyard

Someone vandalized the Brickyard last week with spray paint and toilet paper.

Several derogatory phrases were painted onto the football field. The goalposts and scoreboard were spray painted as well. Also, toilet paper was left hanging in several locations. School maintenance staff has already cleaned most of the graffiti.

The grass inside the stadium will be cut to remove the spray paint from the football field.

MRMC's money woes

The Hospital Authority Board met on July 26, and finances topped the discussions. Indigent care funding continues to be a problem at McDuffie Regional Medical Center.

The board also heard the impact of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds that McDuffi e County advanced to the hospital. The $508,000 of SPLOST created excess revenue over expenses of $295,984.

Former T&W denied rezoning

Charlie Taylor, owner of Jay's Cafe - formerly known as the T&W Lounge - was denied a request to rezone the establishment from residential to commercial use by the McDuffie Planning Commission Tuesday night.

The 3-2 vote, which will go to the County Commission in two weeks for approval, prevents the cafe from operating within a neighborhood.

Jay's Cafe is located on 185 Viola Avery near several homes and two daycare centers. In the early morning hours of Jan. 1, 2002, 14-year-old Aunsharia Moss was killed by a stray bullet outside the then-T&W Lounge.

Commissioners moved to revoke the alcoholic beverage license for the lounge and the business closed soon after her death.
