Authorities release name of victim killed in Interstate 20 wreck

THOMSON, Ga. - The name of a woman killed after her car slammed into the rear of transfer truck on Interstate 20 in McDuffie County on Thursday morning has been released by authorities.

McDuffie County Coroner Rhusha Mack identified the victim as 47-year-old Brenda Reaves, of Tuscumbia, Ala. She died of blunt force head trauma received in the crash, he said.

Ms. Reaves had been flown by helicopter in critical condition to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta following the collision near the Thomson Exit 172 of I-20 about 10:20 a.m., according to Trooper Rich Fishel of the Georgia State Patrol Post in Thomson.

The mishap also injured Ms. Reaves' mother, Barbara Stone, also from Tuscumbia, Trooper Fishel said.

The wreck is believed to have resulted from Ms. Reaves having fallen asleep at the wheel of her Ford Contour before slamming into a truck carrying crushed vehicles. The driver of the truck, Elias Alberto Hernandez, of Norcross, Ga., was not injured.

No charges were filed in the fatal accident - the sixth one of the year on McDuffie County roadways.
