Qualifying to open soon for Thomson City Council seats

Candidates vying to become the new mayor of Thomson or a city council member are reminded that official qualifying for those positions begins on Monday, Aug. 27 at 8:30 a.m. and ends on Friday, Aug. 31 at 5 p.m.

Two officials announced at last Thursday night's city council meeting that they will not be seeking re-election. They include longtime Mayor Robert E. Knox Jr. and Councilman John T. Wiley.

Mayor Knox encouraged council members to "keep the train running."

Already this week, Mayor Pro-Tem Kenneth Usry has announced his political intent to seek the office of mayor.

None of the other council members have made their intentions known at this time - at least publicly.

Candidates wishing to qualify for mayor must pay a qualifying fee of $210, while those seeking a council seat must pay a qualifying fee of $120.
