For children interested in the "great outdoors," Saturday, Sept. 23, will be a good day. The McDuffie County Public Fishing Area, known locally as the "state ponds," will hold an Outdoor Adventure Day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Area Manager George Atnip said that there will be a kids' fishing event, practice airgun and archery range, a wildlife display, and a computer-simulated hunting program.
Mr. Atnip also said that the hunting program allows kids to practice safe shooting through the use of a laser gun and is often a favorite among the 150 to 200 children expected to attend.
The event coincides with National Hunting and Fishing Day, which has been celebrated nationwide since President Nixon signed a bill to create the holiday on May 2, 1972.
This year, events similar to the Outdoor Adventure Day will be held on that day in 31 states and even at the Bass Pro Shop in Ontario, Canada.
