Big Banana

banana_plant.jpg

Darwin Osborne stands beside his banana tree with his grandson, Jackson Stanfield, outside his home on Pylant Crossing Road. Mr. Osborne said he has been growing bananas for about 25 years when his father brought his first tree from Florida. Mr. Osborne said he babies the trees in the winter, keeping them covered or bringing them inside. This particular tree is three years old, and currently has about 40 bananas on it. "You just have to keep them watered all day long. They love the heat, but they take a lot of water," Mr. Osborne said.
