County sets millage rate hearings
The McDuffie County Commission will hold three public hearings next week to receive input on setting the millage rate. The meetings will take place at the courthouse on Aug. 22 at 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. and on Aug. 29 at 6:30 p.m.
Auto-aid changes coming
The fire departments of Dearing and McDuffie County will soon have a new auto-aid agreement drafted. The document outlines where Dearing firefighters can respond to emergencies outside the city limits as well as how McDuffie County can respond inside the town when needed.
Dearing Mayor Sean Kelley informed Town Council members during Monday's meeting that he and McDuffie Fire Chief Bruce Tanner had researched the current agreement. He added that it seemingly had several unexplained geographical holes.
Mayor Kelley said he and Dearing Fire Chief Danny Cason would meet with Chief Tanner again to further hammer out details of a new drop-boundary agreement that would include all areas surrounding the city limits.
Once the new agreement is drafted, it will be brought before McDuffie County Commissioners and the Dearing Town Council for approval.
New park needs name
A proposed park next to the Dearing Town Hall is in need of an official name. Town Council members agreed to ask each class from Dearing Elementary School to come up with a potential name for the park. The winning class will receive an ice cream party, compliments of the town.
The new park already has picnic tables. Further plans call for a walking track, a playground area and a chain link fence surrounding the property. The town is currently researching potential funding sources to complete the park.
