Tony Cannon may be in the red, but he feels he's about to hit the jackpot.
Mr. Cannon and his band, Southbound, just released their first CD entitled "Up To My Neck In Red."
"It's just like they say the road to Nashville is in steps, it's like winning the lottery," Mr. Cannon said. "I feel like our numbers are in the basket with a bunch of other people's, but I feel like it's going to get pulled soon."
Part of the country-rock CD was recorded in Nashville, and the remainder at Renaissance Studio with Ruskin Yeargain in Martinez. The CD was produced by Steve Ferguson, Music Director at WTHO in Thomson.
Southbound band consists of Ed Gaskill of Harlem on the guitar, Chris Powers of Thomson on the slide guitar, Bart Ficzere of Thomson on the keyboard, Jake Jacobs of Thomson playing bass, Mike West of Augusta as drummer, Robbie Ansley of Dearing as back-up vocal, and Steve Ferguson of Thomson as back-up vocal.
"We're like a family, cutting up and having a good time," Mr. Cannon said of Southbound. "We sat on the porch dreaming about the CD and where it's going to go. That was the best part (of recording) for me, being with those guys."
Mr. Ferguson said he was impressed with Mr. Cannon during the recording process. Mr. Ferguson said Mr. Cannon hit every note and cut every song on the first try, making the recording process short.
"I guess that's a good thing as far as saving money," Mr. Cannon said with a laugh.
When he was seven, Mr. Cannon said he started singing along with Garth Brooks tapes, and "just kind of picked it up and have gotten better as the years went, and here I am now making CD's."
The CD is available for $12.95 online at cdbaby.com. Tony Cannon and Southbound will be performing on Saturday, Aug. 20 at Tricky's Steak and Barbeque in Thomson, on Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Moose Club in Thomson. For booking information, contact Legends Entertainment (706) 597-0941.
