The City of Thomson and McDuffie County has added mapping services to the current Thomson-McDuffie.com web portal, according to a Wednesday press release.
The online availability of aerial photography, zoning, and parcel information is a major step in fulfilling the long range information services strategic plan.
"GIS technology is important and essential to basic navigation and planning in the City and County," said Thomson-McDuffie County IT Director Kelly Evans. "Our staff utilizes these resources as a standard protocol in many of their projects. It is a tool that everyone can use."
These high-tech systems create visual layers of maps, allowing more informed decisions about planning in communities. Residents can go online to the city-county web portal, www.thomson-mcduffie.com, and access mapping resources that highlight historic landmarks, public services, and economic development opportunities.
Developed in coordination with GST Consulting, the new mapping service was funded through the Special Purpose Local Option Sales tax, 48 percent of which is contributed by consumers who live outside of McDuffie County.
"The development of this conservative approach allows us to provide mapping for our citizens and our employees, without twice the cost," said County Commission Chairman Charlie Newton. "That is good government."
