System recognizes Teachers of the Year for McDuffie County schools
Special to the Mirror
The McDuffie County Board of Education recently recognized the candidates for the 2008-2009 McDuffie County Teacher of the Year.
One teacher at each of the four McDuffie County Elementary schools, Thomson Middle School and Thomson High School is chosen by their peers as the school's Teacher of the Year. Each of the school-level winners then competes for the honor of being named the McDuffie County Teacher of the Year. Once an overall winner is selected, that person's application will be submitted to the State Department of Education for consideration in the State Teacher of the Year competition.
Each school level winner will complete the state Teacher of the Year application. Those applications will be reviewed by an independent panel of judges who will also conduct interviews with each of the school level winners at a later date. The panel will choose an overall winner for the county.
The McDuffie County Teacher of the Year will be announced at a banquet that will be given to honor all the candidates. This year's banquet is scheduled for Oct. 29, at Belle Meade Country Club. The 2007-2008 McDuffie County Teacher of the Year, Robin Dudley, will deliver remarks to this year's Teacher of the Year candidates.
The 2008-2009 individual school teachers of the year are:
Peggy Carter, Early Intervention Program Teacher, Dearing Elementary School
Melissa Welch, Kindergarten Teacher, Maxwell Elementary School
Leigh Smith, Second Grade Teacher, Thomson Elementary School
Khrista Kent, QUEST Teacher, Norris Elementary School
Patricia Connor, Seventh Grade Teacher & Team Leader, Thomson Middle School
Jesse Morlan, Band Director, Thomson High School.
