Grants from the Governor: Dearing gets $500,000

The Mayor of Dearing experienced a miracle Tuesday morning when he received a phone call informing him that the town is receiving $500,000 under the Georgia Community Development Block Grant.

"Miracles never cease," Mayor Sean Kelley said. "We're very excited and looking forward to the opportunities that the new building will present to the town and the citizens of the Dearing area."

Dearing had applied for a grant through the program to renovate the old Dearing Elementary Gym into a Community Center. Mr. Kelley said County Commission Chairman Charlie Newton called him with the good news.

"I'm really happy. I received the call about 10 this morning, and I called the Mayfest committee right away and told them, and everybody is just thrilled out of their minds," Mayor Kelley said. "The word is spreading like wildfire."

The Mayor said he used the Mayfest committee's dedication to raise funds for the renovation as proof that the citizens in the area are dedicated to the project. Also on the application, Mayor Kelley said he had to show that the building will be used to help the underprivileged in the area. Planned programs include English as a second language classes, parenting classes, senior citizen activities, and basketball camps for the Boys and Girls Club.
