Mr. Lewis R. Newsome
Postal Service retiree

THOMSON, Ga.- Mr. Lewis R. Newsome, 75, of Thomson, passed away on August 20, 2004, at St. Joseph Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Dahlia Abbott Newsome.

Mr. Newsome was a native of Warren County, but lived in Thomson since 1974. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 35 years of service. Mr. Newsome was also a member of First United Methodist Church.

Mr. Newsome is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dahlia Abbott Newsome; son, James A. Newsome of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Brenda (Keith) Jones of Jeffersonville and Kathy (Whit) Whittington of Thomson; two brothers, Leon Newsome, Sr., of Thomson and Melvin Newsome of Vidalia; one sister, Dessie Lee (Willie) Griffith of Jonesboro; one grandson, Warner Jones; three granddaughters, Jennifer Giles, Shellie Smith and Lynette DeLoach; one great-granddaughter, Ashley DeLoach; and his mother-in-law, Ruby Abbott of Warrenton.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., on Sunday, August 22, 2004, in the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel with Drs. George Freeman and Pat Shannon officiating. Interment followed in the Johnson Cemetery in Warren County.

Pallbearers were William Griffith, Jr., Leon Newsome, Jr., John Giles, Dwight Foster, Glen Foster, Kenneth Adair, Pat Smith, and Randal Louk. Honorary pallbearers were Ronald Abbott, Galen Welch, Larry Agner, Bill Jopling, Jack Sims, Johnny Davidson, Bob Hawkins, Gene Helson, and Al Williams.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Johnson Cemetery Fund.

Beggs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
