Bucs defeat David Emanuel in scrimmage football game

The Briarwood Academy Buccaneers opened their pre-season in winning fashion, defeating David Emanuel Academy of Swainsboro 26-6 during the John Hancock Academy Annual Football Jamboree in Sparta last Tuesday night.

"We played a pretty good game for it to be just a scrimmage game," remarked Briarwood first year Head Coach Blake Duncan. "Several of our kids played well. I was proud of the way we came out and executed."

The Bucs didn't let the fact that David Emanuel outsized them hamper what they did on the field.

"They got right in there and did what they needed to do to score points and keep David Emanuel off the scoreboard," Coach Duncan said. "Our execution was good on both sides of the football."

Quarterback duties were shared between junior starter Chase Walker and Dakota Clark, a sophomore.

Walker completed 4-of-6 passes for 51 yards. He also carried the ball four times for 21 yards. Walker also completed a two-point conversion pass following a touchdown in the game.

Clark, meanwhile, rushed for 19-yards on seven carries and completed 3-of-7 passes for 24-yards.

Sophomore running back Matthew McElveen rushed 14 times for a total of 87 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 26 yards.

Junior running back Nick Dawson carried the ball nine times for 57 yards and scored a touchdown.

Junior Cane Gilmer rushed seven times for 26 yards and scored a touchdown.

Three other players also figured prominently into the offensive scheme. Senior John Spivey rushed once for six yards and caught two passes for eight yards. Senior Dave Joesbury made two receptions for 36 yards; while sophomore Trey Stadler made one catch for three yards and scored on a two-point conversion.

Briarwood Academy begins regular season football action tonight at 7:30 p.m., playing host to Edmund Burke Academy's Spartans of Waynesboro.
