Annual Christmas parade to be night affair

Last year's Festival Off Main was a full day completely packed with fun events. To spread the fun a little farther, the organizers have decided to make this year's festival a two-day event.

Festival Off Main 2006 will be Friday, Dec. 1 and Saturday, Dec. 2. The starting time of Friday's event has not been established yet, according to Chamber Director Carolyn Gilbert. But a schedule of events is forming as fast as time flies.

The biggest change this year will be the time of the Christmas parade - 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

"We decided it would be prettier at night," Mrs. Gilbert said. "We thought it would be nice to do at the end of the festival, to give you something to do at the end of the day... and the festivities will just last longer."

Floats and displays glowing with Christmas lights will enhance the "Magical Christmas" parade theme. Mrs. Gilbert said the parade will begin at Thomson Middle School, and follow the same route as last year.

A Grand Marshall has not been named, and Mrs. Gilbert encourages residents to contact the Chamber with nominations of a possible candidate.

In addition to the parade, Mrs. Gilbert said she hopes to have the children's rides still running after dark and many food vendors to entice hungry patrons. The 5K run will begin the festivities on Saturday, followed by holiday shopping with the many arts and crafts vendors.

Events to be held on Friday include the tree lighting ceremony, school children singing, and festivities with Santa.
