Briarwood falls short against Trinity Christian

The Briarwood Academy Buccaneers were only two feet away from winning their second straight game of the young 2004 season last Friday night when the curtain closed.

With just a little more than two minutes left in the game with Trinity Christian School from Dublin, the Buccaneers found themselves behind 9-7 on the scoreboard and with a first down and ten on the Trinity 15 yard line. After a trio of runs that netted eight yards, the Bucs were faced with a fourth down and two situation on the seven yard line.

But Briarwood junior runningback Tyler Wester got the call from quarterback David Russell and was stopped short of the first down to give Trinity the ball for one final time to run out the clock. The Buccaneer "chain gang" said that the ball was only a couple of feet away from a first down, and probably a game-winning touchdown drive.

"That's the game of football in a nut-shell," said Briarwood Academy Head Coach Jimmy Barnett. "Little mistakes here, and little mistakes there, will haunt you for a lifetime.

"We made little mistakes all night. Not only did our players make some key miscues, but myself as a coach, made them also. We will regroup and be ready for this week's opponent in a hurry."

The loss evens Briarwood's overall record to 1-1, as they are preparing for a big match-up against Thomas Jefferson Academy in Louisville this Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

Statistically, the Buccaneers rushed for 142 yards on the ground and threw for 55 yards in the air for a total offense of 197 yards. Trinity Christian rushed for 103 yards and passed for 52 for a grand total of 155 yards of total offense.

Wester was the leading rusher for Briarwood with 88 yards on 12 carries and one touchdown. He was followed by Burt Goolsby with 31 yards on 10 carries and Jeffrey Kent with 23 yards on eight carries.

Trinity Christian put the first points on the board at the 2:26 mark of the first quarter on the 14th play of their initial drive on a 21-yard field goal off the foot of Chris Rogers. The kick made the score 3-0.

The score remained in Trinity's favor until the 1:31 mark of the second period when Wester broke the plane of the goal line from the six yard line. Goolsby's extra point made the score 7-3 in Briarwood's favor.

Wester's score culminated an 18-play drive that featured two interference calls on Trinity as they were trying to defend Buccaneer tight end Kyle Ewest from catching the ball.

Wester setup his score on a 27-yard run earlier in the drive in which he literally drug a Trinity defender by his shirttail for about 10 yards.

The Buccaneers led 7-3 until the 4:57 mark of the fourth quarter, when Trinity quarterback Jordan Price connected with wide receiver Adam Brown on a three-yard touchdown pass. The extra point failed, thus the score became 9-7 in Trinity's favor.

The go-ahead touchdown was set up when Trinity rushed Buccaneer punter Goolsby and blocked his punt on the Briarwood 28 yard line. From there, it took only nine plays for Trinity to regain the lead.

On the ensuing drive, Briarwood had its opportunities to punch the winning points into the endzone. After a 55-yard pass from Russell to Joseph Batrous, the Bucs found themselves with a first down on the Trinity 15 yard line. However, the visitors from Dublin held the Bucs on downs, and received the ball after Briarwood could not convert on a fourth down play with 1:00 left in the game.

"During practice this week as we get prepared for Thomas Jefferson, we will definitely work on our mistakes that we made against Trinity," Coach Barnett said. "Little mistakes can hurt, and they did last Friday night."
