At their last monthly regular meeting, the McDuffie County Board of Education voted to give substitute teachers, paraprofessionals and bus drivers a pay raise.
"Substitute salaries have not been improved in a number of years, so I recommend an increase that includes at least a minimum wage for all substitutes," McDuffie Schools Superintendent Mark Petersen said to the board members during the meeting.
All substitutes are paid on a daily rate, which is based on their degree of eligibility. For the 2008-09 school year, the new substitute rates will range from $48 per day for those with a high school diploma to $65 per day for those with a valid or expired teaching certificate. The pay is a $4 increase from previous years, and is based on a seven-hour day. Paraprofessionals and bus driver substitute rates increased to ranging from $45 to $50 per day.
Other substitutes will be paid $6.85 per hour.
The vote passed unanimously, with all board members present.
