The first 2006-07 meeting for the Tri-County Retired Educators Association will be at 10:30 a.m. today at White Columns Inn. The featured speaker will be Carlos Lankford, the legislative chairman for the Georgia REA. Mr. Lankford will be informing the retirees on issues in the state government concerning their retirement benefits and education during the upcoming year.
"The speaker will probably be the best program we will have all year," Jan McTier, last year's REA president, said. "Carlos is well known for his down-home sense of humor, his talent in explaining legislative information...and his delight in working with retired educators."
Mr. Lankford has 32 years experience of working in schools in Coffee, Emanuel, Toombs and Long counties. In an email, Mr. Lankford said he planned a question and answer time after his speech.
According to the GREA website, membership in the local association provides retired educators with support and fellowship and an organizational framework through which they volunteer service. Membership in the state association promotes the economic, social and professional status of retired educators, the passage of legislation beneficial to them, and the distribution of information of value to them.
All retirees are invited to attend today's meeting, or join the local association by contacting Anne Poss at 706-595-2613.
