Overton blanks Butler as Lady Dogs win

Thomson's Amber Overton was nothing less than superb last Thursday.

The starting pitcher for the Thomson High School Lady Bulldogs fired a no-hitter against the visiting Butler Lady Bulldogs at the Thomson field. The final score was 17-0.

It marked Thomson's first region game of the season. The Lady Bulldogs are now 9-1 overall and 1-0 in region play.

Overton, now 5-0 as a pitcher, struck out six of the nine batters she faced in the game that lasted only three innings because of the 15-run rule. She never allowed the opponents a base runner. In each of the three innings, Overton managed to record a pair of strikeouts.

Defensively, Thomson's Mary Catherine Finnerty, Hannah Pereda and Nichole Usry made the plays necessary to keep Butler players off the base path.

After Butler was set down in order in the top of the first inning, Thomson came back in the bottom half to record a pair of runs on just one hit. The hit was a double into the right center field gap by centerfielder Heather Shivers. Prior to the hit, Thomson already had scored two runs - Hannah Wilson and Casey Brooks - getting the honors. Wilson reached on a leadoff walk, while Brooks got aboard on an error.

In the second, Thomson broke the game wide open, erupting for 11 runs on seven hits.

The hits were delivered by the following players: Wilson, a double, a bases loaded triple and three RBI; Brooks a single and double; Gloria Rowland, a pair of doubles and three RBI; Nichole Usry, a RBI triple; and Hannah Pereda, a RBI double.

The Lady Bulldogs scored their last four runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning.

Natasha Seals reached on a walk and then went to second base on a single by Usry. Caitlin Rogers then walked to load the bases. The bases were cleared by Wilson, the freshman third baseman, who drilled her second triple of the game. She scored on the play, too, because of a throwing miscue.

The Thomson High School Lady Bulldogs were to have played Glenn Hills in Augusta on Tuesday. They will play another key region game on today (Thursday) against the Harlem High Lady Bulldogs at the Thomson field. Game time is 5 p.m.
