Officials break ground for $2 million Sweetwater gym

Construction on the new gym at Sweetwater Park officially began Monday morning at 10 a.m. Officials gathered at the site to break ground for the $2 million, 23,000 square foot facility that will house the recreation department offices, two basketball courts and lots of equipment storage space.

Various local leaders toss shovels of dirt on the field Monday morning that will eventually be home to the Sweetwater gym.

The gym was in the master plan for the park in 1993. Recreation Department Director Bob Howard said he is relieved that the construction has finally begun after all the years of planning.

"We're finally getting to do it, finally going to get the facility that we've needed for a long time," he said.

Construction on the gym should be completed by the end of June 2006.
