It was a wild, crazy and hot game down at Buddy Bufford field in Lincolnton, but the JV Buldogs came away with a 28-7 victory.
Thomson started things out right when Nathaniel Jones returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. After breaking one tackle at midfield, he went untouched to the end zone. Matt McEver added the PAT to put Thomson up 7-0 right out of the gate.
As the first quarter ended, Lincoln put together a 26-yard drive but fumbled the handoff on fourth and one. Bulldog linebacker James Bonner snatched up the ball and raced 65 yards for the Bulldogs' second score. Matt McEver tacked on his second extra point putting the Dogs up 14-0, despite the fact the offense had only run three plays.
Lincoln County would answer right back though. From their 31, the Red Devils completed a 14-yard pass, then a 55-yard pass to a wide open tight end for their only score of the evening. The PAT was good, closing the gap to seven points.
Thomson showed they could score just as quick. The Dogs took over on their own 20 after the kickoff. On second down, quarterback Brandon Turman threw to fullback Dexter Sneed for a 32-yard gain. The next play saw Marquis McGahee break free over the right side and raced 41 yards for the score. McEver added another PAT, bringing the tally to 21-7 in favor of Thomson.
Corey Mathis grabbed his first interception on the next Lincoln drive. He returned the ball 29 yards to the Lincoln 31. Thomson couldn't gain and turned the ball over on downs at the Lincolnton 31.
The Red Devil's second drive of the third quarter ended on the Thomson four where they fumbled into the end zone. Thomson recovered the ball and took over at its own 20, a little over halfway through the third quarter.
On third and eight, Brandon Turman dropped back and set up in the pocket, then launched the ball deep down field to a wide open Nathaniel Jones. The ball was a tad under thrown and Jones had to come back for it. He made the catch off balance, yet managed to stay on his feet, using one hand on the ground for support.
He spun and eluded two close defenders. One more Lincoln defender was right on Jones' heels as he turned back up field, but Jones turned on the jets and left the rest of the defense in the dust for a 78-yard score. McEver was perfect again, adding his fourth PAT and extending the score to the final margin of 28-7.
Lincoln got the ball back for the final time with 6:57 to go in the game. The Red Devils picked up 33 quick yards but Corey Mathis got his second interception two plays later ending Lincoln's offensive play for the night.
Led by Dexter Sneed and D'Juan Martin, Thomson's second team put together a nine play, 43-yard drive, to wind down the entire 5:46 left on the clock, securing the Bulldog victory.
Thomson's offense gained a total of 218 yards, 108 on the ground and 110 through the air. Marquis McGahee was the leading ground gainer with 46 yards, 41 of that coming on his long touchdown run. D'Juan Martin added 28 yards on the ground. Dexter Sneed rushed five times for 22 yards and had one reception for 32 yards.
Nathaniel Jones added 78 receiving yards on his long TD catch. Brandon Turman was 2 of 7 passing for 110 yards and a touchdown. Turman has four completions this year for 175 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, the Dogs gave up a lot of yards but kept the Devils out of the end zone most of the night. Justin Samuels and Corey Mathis both had highlight film quality games. Samuels had 8 tackles, several of those for losses. He also added two big-time sacks Mathis added 5 tackles of his own and had two key interceptions.
Bryan McNair added another five tackles.
The JV Dogs take on the Greenbrier Wolfpack in the Brickyard this Thursday night at 5:30.
