The Augusta Players will open its 63rd consecutive season this weekend with Grease, and two Thomson residents will star in the production. Thomson High School junior Carol Poss will play the character of Patty Simcox, and THS 1992 graduate, Shawn Dingus, will play Vince Fontane.
"I'm just excited to get a real role," Miss Poss said. "This is my first production with the Augusta Players, so I'm glad to be doing it."
Mr. Dingus, who won many vocal awards while at THS, said he invites McDuffie County residents to come and enjoy the production. He also hopes it will spark new interest in the county for the arts. Mr. Dingus said he has been performing with the Augusta Players for several years, and he has a cameo appearance in this production.
Set in 1959, the musical focuses on the romance between two teenagers at a fictional Chicago high school. Written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, the plot addresses social issues such as teen pregnancy, gang violence amid teen rebellion, friendship and class conflict, according to the website. The show's score celebrates '50s rock and roll, as well as doo-wop and other contemporary styles.
"Musically, this production is fantastic," Mr. Dingus said. "You couldn't get a better group of voices together, I think. It's just awesome."
The performances are at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28 and Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Imperial Theatre. A 3 p.m. matinee performance will be Sunday, Sept. 30. Tickets range from $12 to $38. The Imperial Theater is located on Broad Street in downtown Augusta.
