Tax Commissioner asks for help
By Sandra Whitaker
McDuffie County Tax Commissioners
As tax commissioner, I need your help. McDuffie County has on record, 2,876 mobile homes. Of this number 1,187 are homesteaded, which means the owner of the mobile home lives in the mobile home that is setup on his or her property. In other words he or she owns the land, mobile home, and lives in it year round. The remaining 1,689 mobile homes are setup on someone else's property, either on a lot or in one of many mobile home parks located in the city or county.
I am sure there are many mobile homes that are not reported to the Tax Assessor's Office. This is where you come into play, the code enforcers employed by the county and city, as well as the staff of the Tax Assessor's Office are on the look out for mobile homes that do not display a current mobile home decal. However these people cannot cover every inch of the county, but you can help by reporting any mobile home you see that does not display a current decal. Not having a current decal means taxes have not been paid on that mobile home. To you, this will mean you may have to pay a higher millage rate in order for the County, School and City of Thomson to operate in the future.
Very soon I will begin the process of selling mobile homes for delinquent taxes. The owner will lose the mobile home and will not be able to redeem it at a later time. Mobile Home residents - Would you want to lose your home for a few hundred dollars?
