THS JV tops Greenbrier 12-7

The Thomson Bulldogs JV squad beat the Greenbrier Wolfpack JV in the Brickyard Thursday evening, 12-7. Thomson scored twice on its first four offensive plays but both were called back on penalties.

Thomson's James Bonner tries to pull away from a Greenbrier defender.

It appeared the game would be a blowout, but quickly settled into a defensive battle. Thomson's Nathaniel Jones scored on a 60-yard punt return in the middle of the first quarter and Greenbrier answered with a touchdown pass early in the second.

Brandon Turman hooked up on a 35-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy McGahee as the first half expired. This touchdown was set up by a Justin Samuels interception with just 2.2 seconds left in the second quarter, allowing one play to provide the final margin of 12-7.

There was no scoring in the second half. The Bulldogs stopped a late fourth quarter drive by Greenbrier to secure the victory.

Thomson received the ball on its 31 to start the first half. Carlton Martin carried the ball 12 yards to set up Marquis McGahee's 57-yard touchdown run. A block in the back penalty brought the ball back to the 39.

Martin once again carried, this time for 6, and again, McGahee broke free for a 33-yard touchdown run. This time holding was the call, erasing Thomson's second touchdown in four plays.

The Dogs would gain one first down before stalling and turning the ball over on downs at the Wolfpack 24. Greenbrier gained only 5 yards on three plays and was forced to punt.

Nathaniel Jones fielded the kick at the Thomson 40 yard line, and raced to the end zone for his second special teams' score of the year. The score was set at 6-0 after Thomson missed the PAT.

Early in the second quarter, Greenbrier, facing fourth and 8 from the 20, launched a successful pass to the end zone for its only score of the ball game. The Wolfpack added the PAT to take the lead 7-6.

A Thomson drive to midfield ended with an interception with 1:18 left in the half. Greenbrier drove down to the Thomson 28 but threw its own interception. Thomson's Justin Samuels picked off the Wolfpack pass at the Thomson 25 and returned it 40 yards to the Greenbrier 35, stepping out of bounds with just 2.2 seconds on the clock.

Thomson quarterback Brandon Turman had one play to make something happen and he took advantage, hooking up with Jeremy McGahee on a 35-yard touchdown strike as the first half expired. The Dogs failed on the two point try and took a 12-7 lead into the locker room.

Nathaniel Jones led the Thomson rushers with 64 yards on 4 carries and added a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown. Marquis McGahee had 41 yards on 7 carries.

Brandon Turman was 4 of 9 passing for 69 yards. He threw two interceptions and one 35-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy McGahee. Turman has thrown a touchdown pass in each of the three games played thus far.

The Thomson defense was led by Justin Samuels for the second week as he racked up 4 tackles and a big play interception which set up the Dogs second touchdown. James Bonner had six tackles while Clint Chalker added five. Matt McEver had two punts, averaging 32.5 yards.

This week Thomson travels to Washington to take on the JV Tigers of Washington-Wilkes. Game time is 5:30.
