Lady Bucs start softball playoffs

The Briarwood Academy Lady Buccaneers' softball team will play the number three team in GISA Region 4AA in the first round of the GISA AA state playoffs at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the recreation complex in Dublin.

The Lady Bucs won't know which team that will be until Region 4 finishes a three-way playoff for its top spots.

"We'll play one of the losers, but that's not saying much, because it's a very strong region from the top to the bottom, with no apparent weaknesses," Coach Robert Waller said.

Arlington Christian School, Lafayette Christian School and Furtah Preparatory School, all from the LaGrange area, were scheduled to compete in the three-way playoff this week for the seedings in the Saturday playoffs.

"We're looking forward to going and playing," Coach Waller said, adding, "Arlington would be our worst draw."

The Lady Bucs finished the regular season last Thursday with a 2-1 loss to Gatewood in Eatonton, leaving Gatewood the only undefeated team in region play.

Although playing without the services of injured senior Katie Reese and Lady Bucs Sara Nutial and Jamie Russell, the Lady Bucs played well defensively, but, "uncharacteristically, we didn't hit well.

"We missed Katie Reese," Coach Waller said. "She brings a lot of intangibles that can't be replaced by physical talent."

Nonetheless, the Lady Bucs, who lost to Gatewood earlier in the season, again by only one run and in extra innings, played well, Waller said.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when Gatewood scored its first run.

The Lady Bucs tied the game in the top of the sixth when Cassie Pickrell reached first base on a hit, moved to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a hit by Beth Gerlach, and then scored on an RBI by Ali Dyson.

Gatewood scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on the Lady Bucs' only error of the game.

The win gave Gatewood sole possession of first place in Region 1AA and left the Lady Bucs in second place.

The Lady Bucs finished the regular season 9-3 in Region 1AA play and 14-6 overall.
