I would like to take the opportunity to thank the many employers of the soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 214th Field Artillery, Georgia Army National Guard. During the past month, our units were alerted on two separate occasions to prepare to provide humanitarian assistance support to the State of Florida in anticipation of the widespread devastation related to recent hurricanes. Thank you for supporting your soldier and the Georgia National Guard. It is through the sacrifice of employers like you that we are able to serve Georgia and the nation as citizen-soldiers. We cannot accomplish our mission without you.
Responding to provide relief during the aftermath of hurricanes is consistent with our traditional state mission, which is - at the call of the Governor - to support state and local law enforcement and emergency management agencies in times of emergency.
In addition to responding to emergencies in-state, Georgia has agreements with neighboring states, including Florida, to assist and to share resources in times of emergency. In recent weeks, the Florida National Guard has responded to four major hurricanes, committing considerable troops and equipment. In addition, like all states, the Florida National Guard has a number of soldiers and airmen federally mobilized in support of the Global War on Terrorism.
Undoubtedly, your employee's absence means hardship and heavier workloads for you and your other employees. This is especially true inasmuch as the 1st Battalion, 214th Field Artillery units have been called upon recently to support our state and nation.
The 1st Battalion, 214th Field Artillery has an excellent track record of successfully responding in times of need, including the G8 Summit, the flooding in central and southwest Georgia, and the Centennial Olympic Games. The battalion was also called upon to support the Global War on Terrorism providing support to Operations Enduring Freedom and Noble Eagle III. Your patriotism and support for your soldier during his service represents the enduring character of our nation.
Without your support the citizen-soldiers of your National Guard could not be there when our state and nation are threatened.
Thank you, again, for your patriotic support of the U.S. Army and the Georgia National Guard.
Woodrow S. Radcliffe
