The Family Y experienced nothing but success during its first week of business in Thomson. The Y assumed responsibilities of Health Link on October 1.
"We are excited about the level of interest in Thomson," said Danny McConnell, the president and CEO of Family Y. "Things have gone very well this first week. The transition has been very smooth thanks to the expertise of the staff."
Branch Manager DeDe Keir said there have been no problems, and the staff is still learning the new computer system, "but it's going really good." Mrs. Keir said the outside of the building is being painted a new almond color, and a sign with the Y logo will be put up.
"Within the next 60 days, the public will begin to see some physical changes to make Health Link look more like a YMCA," Mr. McConnell said.
In addition to the new paint color, Mrs. Keir said the inside is being remodeled to include a day care and spinning room.
The day care will be open in December for the care of children while their parents are working out. There is no additional cost for the use of the day care. The day care hours will be 8 until 11:30 a.m. and 4 until 7:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 8 until 11:30 a.m. and 4 until 7 p.m., Friday, and 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday.
"We may extend our hours on Saturday after the New Year gets here," Mrs. Keir said.
The spinning room will be for the Johnny G bicycle exercise program.
In addition to the Johnny G stationary cycles, Mrs. Keir said new treadmills and other cardio equipment will be arriving as early as next week. Plans are being made for summer camps and swimming lessons for children.
"Everybody is excited about the changes," Mrs. Keir said. "Everybody is excited about the possibility of new programs and new classes."
The Family Y is located in the old Health Link building across from the McDuffie Regional Medical Center on Hill Street. For more information, call 706-595-5615.
