Fifteen years ago now, I sat down with Thomson Head Coach Luther Welsh as a novice newswriter for The Bulldog Bark at THS. The legend had just announced the end of his first tenure at the helm of the Dogs. He spoke about how he was looking forward to his next challenge and how he was thankful for the experience at Thomson.
Last week, as the legend notched his 460th game as a head coach - more than any other coach in Georgia history - I had to smile. I remember hearing following his first stint here that he probably didn't have many more years with the headsets left in him.
Surprise. Fifteen years later, he's still going strong - cancer and heart trouble be darned.
He's seen a lot of changes over the years, but has adapted his program so that Thomson High still produces young men who are successful on and off the football field. That leg up means more to many of his players than Coach Welsh will ever know - but that's the reason he still does what he does week in and week out.
Shifting gears, don't forget to sign your kids up for a spot in our Christmas section. The photographer for The Mirror's annual Christmas section will be here on Oct. 27 and 28.
We're signing up people for times now, and - just like in the past - there's no charge for the picture session or for getting them in the paper.
If you'd like your child to be included in this year's group, call us at 595-8788 and get on the list.
