No plans to cut Dearing trees

If a tree falls in Dearing, Mark Petersen is sure to hear about it. The superintendent of McDuffie County Schools fielded multiple calls and visits from residents upset about the cutting of a few trees in front of the old Dearing Elementary building that is still owned by the school system.

CSRA Regional Educational Service Agency occupies the building, and according to Dr. Petersen, RESA Director Terry Nelson authorized the cutting of three trees in the three acre lot that is home to Mayfest. One tree was diseased, and the other two were leaning toward the parking lot, Dr. Petersen said.

He added that no plans were made to cut the rest of the trees, some of which are over 100 years old. Residents like Billy Rodgers who went to visit Dr. Petersen were relieved to find out that the trees would stay.
