Tommy Phelps, president of the organization which serves both McDuffie and Warren Counties, said funds raised this year would benefit 17 local agencies and all decisions on how to disburse the donations are made locally.
This year, the local United Way has tapped Charles Bellmann as executive director. Mr. Bellmann has served as president of the CSRA United Way, president of the Metro Augusta Chamber of Commerce and president of the CSRA Community Foundation.
"Our United Way has been volunteer driven and having Charlie as director is a big step," Mr. Phelps said.
The campaign will run until mid December and will benefit a number of local organizations that help the needy and foster development of youth and leaders. The funds will be administered by an all-volunteer board of directors.
"Beyond what we give to our churches, this is the most important effort in the community," said United Way board member Dot Knox.
Donations from businesses as well as individuals are welcome and may be sent to The United Way, P.O. Box 87, Thomson, GA 30824.
