The Friends of the Library will hold their annual Veteran's Canteen from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Thomson-McDuffie Library. Keynote speaker Daniel Adkins will speak at 10:30 a.m.
Friends of the Library President Frances Cowart said Mr. Adkins is a veteran who served in Iraq, and he will bring his guitar and perform a song that he wrote about his time in the service. Mr. Adkins will be accompanied by his wife, Von, who is currently on active duty. The Adkins reside in Dearing.
Librarian Suzan Harris said coffee, juice and donuts will be served during the fellowship time with the Veterans. Ms. Harris said local "die-hard veterans" come every year and talk about their experiences. At last year's canteen, Ms. Harris said a young man walked in who was about to be deployed.
"And they were all sitting around talking about their experiences, and they talk about it with such love," she said. "And when this young man got up to leave, every one of those Vets stood up and saluted him. ... It's very patriotic. I can't describe the feeling I have around these people. It's an honor."
