Cook-off raises scholarship money

The fourth annual McDuffie Educational Secretaries Association Chili Cook-Off was a success thanks to great cooks and chilly temperatures Friday night.

"We are pleased with how it turned out this year," said Julia Lambert, who is an event coordinator for the association. "We didn't have as many teams participate as in the past, but we still did really well... and the cold weather I think helped, because everybody was ready for chili. It was perfect chili weather."

Six teams spiced up the competition in the event, which is held every year in the Central Office parking lot immediately before the last home game of the Thomson High football season. Chili lovers had the opportunity to warm their insides for one dollar per bowl.

Approximately $600 was raised and will be used by MESA to provide scholarships to THS graduates.

Judges were McDuffie County Commission Chairman Charlie Newton, Thomson Mayor Bob Knox and Dearing Mayor Sean Kelley. Four trophies and gift baskets were awarded after all the chili was consumed. Sidney Smith and Phil McCorkle won "Most Chili Sold," The McDuffie Mirror won "Most Donations Collected." Regions Bank won "Best Tasting Chili," and First Bank won "Best Decorated Booth."

"Regions Bank is honored to participate in community events like the MESA cook-off, and to support their scholarship program," said Branch Manager Pam Capps. "We were very honored that they liked our chili."

Ms. Lambert said MESA wants to thank all those who participated, and all the businesses that provided prizes: Ryan's, Wendy's, White Columns, It's a Southern Thing, Augusta Coca-Cola, Blimpie, TMS Band, Wal-Mart, McDuffie County Special Olympics, First Bank, Fred's, Burger King, Ray Guy, Stephen's Jewelry, Queensboro Bank, Domino's, Tuff Luck Cafe, Ming Wah Restaurant, Thomson High School, Abigail's on Main, McDonald's, THS Bulldog Brigade, Amigo's, Athen's Janitorial Supply, Axxon's, First Citizen's Bank, Sonic, Regions Bank, SunTrust Bank, Thomson Elementary School, Thomson-McDuffie Chamber of Commerce, Luckey Printing, McDuffie County Board of Education, Farm Bureau Insurance, Neal's Barbecue, Luckey Chinese Restaurant, Huddle House, Zaxby's,.
