Board to choose Sweetwater gym design

The culmination of nearly a decade of work will be one step closer this Friday, Nov. 12. The Recreation Advisory Board will meet at noon to choose between four sets of plans for construction on the new gymnasium at Sweetwater Park.

The design plans -- all of which are about 22,000 square feet -- come from the Facility Group, a planning firm that was hired to design and implement construction on the gym.

Thomson-McDuffie County Recreation Director Bob Howard sent information packets to the members of the advisory board on Nov. 3 advising them of the meeting and detailing the plans for the building.

"I have also enclosed a letter from the Facility Group that explains each design," Mr. Howard's letter stated. "Our mission will be to select the design that will be best for us."

The building will cost between $1.8 million and $2 million and will be paid for out of Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax dollars. For Thomson City Councilman and Recreation Advisory Board Member Mike Carrington, choosing the plans is an exciting step towards construction.

"I'm at least glad to see some drawings," he said of the gym that has become a necessity in the eyes of recreation officials.

The growing 21st Century after school program is competing for space and time in school gyms that were once only used for recreation basketball leagues during the evenings.

"I'll be glad to see it," Mr. Carrington said. "To start with it was a want-to. Now it's about a must. We're about out of gym space. Not to mention that it will sure look nice out there at Sweetwater Park and help kind of round that park out."

All of the designs include two basketball courts, offices and storage space for recreation equipment. Mr. Carrington said that once construction gets underway, it should take between nine months and year to complete.

The decision on a plan brings to a close the month-long process of consulting with the Facility Group on what needed to be included in the plans for the building.

Scheme 'A'-

  • One story with mezzanine storage.

  • Central lobby to gyms, Rec. dept and adjunct spaces.

  • Square footage is highest of all plans thus construction cost will be higher.

  • Stair for mezzanine level is not optimum for moving items from first to second floor.

  • Future gym expansion is to the left of the gyms.

    Scheme 'B'-

  • One story.

  • Lobby to gyms is located at remote end of building with adjacency to Rec. dept and adjunct spaces. This leaves a long corridor along the main entrances to the gyms.

  • Main Rec. department storage is located along the front with access facing the ball fields.

  • Future gym expansion is to the left of the gyms.

  • Plan is in the middle as far as overall size goes, 22,525 SF.

  • Front elevation has angular face with stepped back at lobby / main entrance.

    Scheme 'C'-

  • One story.

  • Lobby to gyms is located at remote end of building with adjacency to Rec. dept and adjunct spaces. This leaves a long corridor along the main entrances to the gyms.

  • Main Rec. department storage is located along the front with access facing the ball fields.

  • Future gym expansion is to the left of the gyms.

  • Plan is in the middle as far as overall size goes, 22,526 SF.

  • Front elevation has curved face with stepped back at lobby / main entrance.

    Scheme 'D'-

  • One story.

  • Central lobby to gyms for good control and access and adjacency to Rec. dept and adjunct spaces.

  • Main Rec. department storage is located away from public viewing and access.

  • Future gym expansion is to the left of the gyms.

  • Plan is the smallest of the schemes, 22,347 SF. Plan is the most efficient on square footage.

  • Front elevation has curved face with canopy at lobby / main entrance.
