Thomson High hits the road Friday night for a first-round match-up in the Class AAA state playoffs against the Jackson Red Devils, an undefeated team from the Atlanta area.
For Thomson coaches, players and fans, it's new territory for the Bulldogs. Instead of being among the top seeds in the playoffs, Thomson (5-5) is facing a No. 1 seed.
Thomson Head Coach Luther Welsh and his staff are hoping their offensive unit has made the kind of adjustments this week in practice that will keep them in the game against the undefeated Red Devils.
"We'll know soon enough," said Coach Welsh. "We're going to have to play mistake-free football if we plan to beat Jackson. They are a pretty good team. They have yet to be beaten this year. We would like to be the first ones to hand them a loss."
The season has been a struggle for the Bulldogs, since they are so young and have such an inexperienced offensive line.
"We've had offensive line problems all season," said Coach Welsh. "And we've still got offensive line problems. We've seen some improvements, but we're still so inconsistent."
And once the first whistle sounds on Friday, Coach Welsh said it's in the hands of the players.
"All we can do as coaches is to prepare them," said Coach Welsh. "They're the ones who have to execute the plays."
