Jason B. Smith has been promoted to publisher for the Morris-owned nondaily newspaper The McDuffie Mirror in Thomson. The announcement was made by William S. Morris IV, Morris Publishing Group president and chief executive officer, and is effective immediately.

Mr. Smith, 32, has been editor of the Mirror since its inception in 2003. He previously was the Columbia County bureau chief for The Augusta Chronicle and also news editor of The Columbia County News-Times.
He is a graduate of Thomson High School and Augusta State University. He worked as a correspondent for The Augusta Chronicle before joining the newspaper in 1997. He also is a member of the Thomson Rotary Club and is on the board of the Thomson-McDuffie County Chamber of Commerce.
"Jason is a good example of our employees who serve our readers and our communities," said President and CEO Morris. "We are especially glad that he will be taking the leadership of a newspaper that is serving the citizens of his own hometown."
