A McDuffie County company is going to the big leagues.
Gerry Davis, a major league umpire and CEO of Gerry Davis Sports, announced the award of his baseball apparel contract to Chardan, Ltd.
Chardan will manufacture baseball apparel for Gerry Davis Sports, who will then supply umpires across the country from the little leagues to the big leagues.
"We feel really honored to be working with Gerry and his company," said Chardan plant manager Tommy Johnson. "Gerry is a great guy who can be quite entertaining with his baseball stories. He has been very easy to work with, and I am really excited to see this happen for Chardan. It's quite a thrill to know that umpires at all levels will be wearing our pants."
Mr. Davis is a veteran major league umpire with 26 years of major league experience. He was on the umpire crew that called the World Series between the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians in 1995. He started Gerry Davis Sports in the late 1980's so he could supply products to the baseball industry. Gerry Davis Sports is currently expanding its sales into other sports such as basketball and soccer. Chardan, Ltd. will also assist them in the development and sales of these products.
This past summer Charles, Tommy and Walt Johnson of Chardan were guests of Mr. Davis at Turner Field in Atlanta when the Atlanta Braves played the Washington Nationals. Mr. Davis was the plate umpire in the final game of the series which Atlanta won when rookie Jeff Francouer hit two home runs.
