Hotels miss tax payments
Two local hotels have neglected to pay their taxes to McDuffie County over the past few months. According to Jimmy Whitaker, the county finance officer, Days Inn missed paying its monthly hotel/motel tax since July, and Holiday Inn Express has missed its payments since September.
"It just showed up in the last couple to three months," Mr. Whitaker said. "That's the amazing thing because prior to this everybody had done very well in paying these things and filing these tax returns. So we haven't had a problem until recently."
Currently, Mr. Whitaker is attempting to locate the hotel owners to inform them of the outstanding bills. If the money still isn't paid after the owners are notified, the county attorney will get involved by sending a letter.
