Commissioner-elect commends firefighters

Dear Editor,

As a county commissioner-elect, my wife and I had the honor to attend the 12th annual McDuffie County Fire/Rescue Banquet held on Nov. 22, 2008. at The Depot. This dedicated group provided an excellent meal, program and awards banquet. The entire banquet was held with volunteer labor and donations from the community, with no cost to the taxpayers of our county.

Many citizens probably do not realize that there are only six full-time fire\rescue service positions, and not aware of the 75 volunteers who are on-call during any given period of time. These brave men and women risk their lives everyday to help and serve our community. Most of us do not know how much of their time is devoted to teaching; training and helping others become aware of fire safety. This department even sponsors a youth training program for students as young as 15, with hopes of retaining them for future service with the fire department.

Congratulations to Captain David Durrence who was selected Fireman of the Year and to all of the other award recipients for their many outstanding years of service. We are so fortunate to have the leadership we have within this department and should take the opportunity to thank each of them for their service and dedication.

Paul McCorkle, McDuffie County Commissioner-elect
