Lady Bucs begin hoops season with perfect record

Briarwood Academy senior Anne Wills scored a career-high 34 points last Saturday night, Dec. 4, to lead the Lady Buccaneers to a 71-52 win over the Augusta Christian Lady Lions in the finale of the Garden City Classic Basketball Tournament in Augusta.

The 19-point win clinched the tournament championship for the Lady Bucs, who now enjoy an undefeated 3-0 record in the early going of the 2004-2005 basketball campaign. All three wins came during this tourney.

This was the second time in a four-year span that the Lady Bucs have won this prestigious tournament. Action for Briarwood began last Tuesday night, Nov. 30, at the gym of Augusta Prep, and continued through the weekend of Dec. 3-4.

The Lady Bucs' victory on Friday night was again at the Augusta Prep facility, then the championship game on Dec. 4 was played at the Augusta State University Athletic Complex.

"I am so proud of our girls for their tremendous effort and execution in the three games of this tournament," said Lady Buc Head Coach Clayton Parrish. "This was the second time in three or four years that we have won this tournament, and this was one of our pre-season goals to accomplish. The whole team played extraordinarily great to be able to bring home the championship trophy."

In special award recognitions following the championship contest, Wills was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, while her teammate, Katie Reese, was named to the All-Tournament Team.

In the three-game span of the tournament, Wills scored a total of 70 points which included 18 field goals, five 3-point shots, and 19 of 25 free throws. During the championship game last Saturday, Wills connected on 11 of 15 free throws as the opposition fouled out two players who attempted to defend her during the game.

Reese scored a total of 24 points in the three-game tournament to become the team's second-leading scorer.

The Lady Bucs opened the tournament on Tuesday night, Nov. 30 with a 46-42 win over the Lady Cavaliers of Augusta Prep. Briarwood scored in double figures in all four quarters to propel the team to victory.

Wills led all the Briarwood scorers with 24 points. She was followed in the scoring column by Cassie Pickrell with seven points, Katie Reese with five points, Ashley Pickard and Mallory Jo Bradshaw with four points each and Alyssa Sutton with two points.

In the Dec. 3 contest at the gym of Augusta Prep, the Lady Buccaneers dominated Dominion Christian all night long to post a 52-24 win for their second straight victory.

Briarwood led 15-7 after one quarter of play and controlled a 31-13 advantage at halftime. The Lady Bucs outscored Dominion 9-2 and 12-9 respectively in the second half to cruise to the win.

Wills led all the Briarwood scorers with 12 points. Following her were Reese with 10 points, Pickard and Beth Gerlach with eight points each, Sutton with four points, Bradshaw and Blythe Ansley with three points each and Olivia Lyons and Whitney Carani with two points each.

This victory propelled the Lady Bucs into the championship game against Augusta Christian on Saturday night, December 4, at the Augusta State University Athletic Complex.

Both teams scored in double figures in each quarter to make it a somewhat close contest. Briarwood controlled the lead of the game 16-12 after the first quarter and maintained a 31-23 lead at halftime. The Lady Bucs outscored the Lady Lions of Augusta Christian 20-11 and 20-18 respectively in the third and fourth quarters to record the 71-52 win and grab the tournament championship honors.

Wills smoked the court with a career-high 34-point performance over double-teaming most of the night. She was followed by Sutton with 11 points, Reese with nine points and Bradshaw with seven points.

The Lady Bucs will play host to two games this weekend at the Clinton H. Grant Fieldhouse on the campus of Briarwood Academy.

On Friday night, Dec. 10, the Lady Bucs will play host to Augusta Prep, and then on Saturday, Dec. 11, Briarwood will entertain Thomas Jefferson.
