The tax man is coming sooner and sooner.
Just a year after moving the due date for property taxes in McDuffie County up a full month, commissioners agreed last week to move the date up five more days starting in 2008. That means property taxes will be due Nov. 15, according to Tax Commissioner Sandra Whitaker.
Mrs. Whitaker told commissioners that during a recent training session with a state auditor, it was learned that only one of three dates was acceptable under the Official Code of Georgia Annotated 48-5-148/150 for a county the current size of McDuffie County. The possible three dates for property tax payments were Nov. 15, Dec. 1 and Dec. 15.
"Since we have used a Nov. 20 deadline the last two years, there no doubt will be concern with moving the deadline back by even five days," Mrs. Whitaker said. "Nevertheless, it is believed the Nov. 15 date would best serve McDuffie County for several reasons, while getting into compliance with the law.
